Samaya Ayurveda Skincare

Samaya Ayurveda anti-ageing cream

There’s many things to like about the new Samaya skin care range* starting with their ingredients. Samaya is all-natural and free from many ingredients that some people are allergic to or just want to avoid in general. Here’s a list of ingredients you won’t find in Samaya: parabens, sulphates, TEA,DEA, propylene, glycol, phthalates, petrochemicals, synthetic colour, synthetic fragrance, phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, mineral oils and silicones. I’m especially pleased with the exclusion of mineral oils and silicones as I personally don’t get on with them, my skin tends to break out. So rejoice sensitive skins! This brand might just be perfect for you.

Secondly I like their ethos too. Samaya is based on Ayurvedic principles. Now I will admit that I’m pretty cynical about this kind of thing but I won’t ignore a holistic approach to health that has been around for millennia. I think more than ever our lifestyles should be approached in a more rounded manner and I don’t see why skincare should be excluded from it. Samaya say:

At the core of Ayurveda lies the concept of achieving harmony between the mind, body and soul. When these three are not in balance with each other, we can see and feel the effects on our health and wellbeing, both internally and externally.

Ayurveda is based on the belief that in order to achieve and maintain balance, we should pay attention to our lifestyle as a whole. Regular exercise, rejuvenating sleep and a nourishing diet all play an important role, as does looking after your wellbeing according to your dosha type.
Dosha is the name given to the energies that govern every individual. There are primarily three types of dosha: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each type corresponds to a set of physical and emotional traits. Often one dosha dominates, however some individuals find that a combination of two, or in rare cases all three, doshas best defines their character.

When our particular dosha is balanced, our mind, body and soul are in perfect harmony, which is revealed through radiant, healthy skin. Yet when our dosha is imbalanced, we notice the ill-effects, including on our skin. Being aware of our dosha type means we can make choices to help balance these energies to achieve wellness, peace and calm, all of which contribute to younger-looking, stress-free, beautiful skin.” (read more here)

Before you begin with their skincare you need to find out what dosha you are/have, which you can do here. My type is Kapha, there’s also Vata or Pitta. I would have to say it describes my skin type perfectly “skin is usually thick and pale, can be radiant and glowing, but with clogged pores or excess oil when out of balance”. Of course you can try out the other doshas too if you feel one of the other ones is more appropriate.

I was sent Samaya Anti-Ageing Cream Kapha* once I had figured out my dosha, I say figured out but the questionnaire was easy and straight forward. I’ve been using it daily for around 2 weeks now so I think I have a good handle on how it works for me. Firstly though, I absolutely love the packaging. It’s a sleek, minimal glass bottle which fits perfectly with the high standard of ingredients it contains. It is packed full of active Ayurvedic ingredients to help balance out the dosha skin type such as Ashwagandha, Sandalwood, Vetivert and Frankincense (the full list can be found here) As well as helping balance out the skin it does a fantastic job at helping to reduce the look of wrinkles and improve overall smoothness and suppleness.

While the white cream is rich it absorbs surprisingly quickly. I was worried that it would feel oily or just sit on top of my skin but within seconds it was fully absorbed. I’ve experienced no breakouts or any other problems, it suits my skin type amazingly well. The smell is very reassuring too, a kind of warm smell thanks to the inclusion of frankincense. It definitely has a unisex appeal so I think men would love using this moisturiser too. It’s not the cheapest at £89 but I think this reflects the quality of ingredients, plus a little does go a long way so it should last quite a while.

Along with Samaya Anti-Ageing Cream I received a small sample of Samaya Hydrating Cleanser in Vata*. This has a beautiful rose scent and helps to balance delicate dry skin. And I definitely think dry skins would love using this, my skin was gently cleansed and felt soft and soothed after use. A really lovely cleanser.

What I like most about the Samaya range, apart from how brilliantly it works, is that they’re actually trying to achieve something different with their products. Samaya is made in the UK and it’s a joy to see something innovative being produced. More of this please!
